SHAKEN / Selling some prints & henna time to fundraise for Kanahus Manuel, whose home was just destroyed in a targeted in a hate attack. I came to know of Kanahus while reading her father Arthur Manuel’s books, Unsettling Canada and Reconciliation Manifesto. In addition to being a mother, birth worker, and artist, Kanahus is also a renowned activist and land defender of Secwepemc and Ktunaxa Nation, consistently targeted with violence because of her land and water defence work.
While the identity of the attacker is still unclear, there are many signs that this was a racially charged retaliatory attack as a result of Kanahus’ activist work: they ripped up a copy of Unsettling Canada, by Kanahus’ father, by hand, page by page. They also attempted to use her wedding dress to start a fire. And the doors of the house were off their hinges and cut up into pieces.
Not only is this home the site where Kanahus lives with her family, but the home is also used as a community hub. The Native Youth Movement has used the space as their headquarters and two freedom Mothers gave birth in this space.
Part of landback is standing with defenders, like Kanahus, in solidarity, and one way to do this is to support Kanahus in rebuilding her home. To donate directly or for more information, please visit her fundraising page: https://chuffed.org/.../help-land-defender-kanahus-manuel...
